Two possible commissions for my personal project are to make promotional videos for two restaurants that I have frequent contact with. I'm currently working as a chef and my boss is opening a new restaurant catered to vegans and vegetarians. This means there is an opening to make him a promotional video for the new restaurant. Also, my friend who I work with is opening a burger diner. The same concept applies and I have the opportunity to make him a promotional video as well.
Both places would be great to work for as they are real clients and that means I can use their testimonials on my portfolio. Even though promotional video making isn't necessarily what I want to do when I'm in the industry, I think it would be good to explore different areas to get experience and try to pinpoint what I really enjoy.
I really love high quality food and I think that I would be able to express that well through an artistic video that has quality camera work in it. The videos could include a montage of chopping and cooking throughout.
After speaking to Leon, who is opening the burger diner, we decided that the video would be no more than 30 seconds - 1 minute. It would showcase the food and also have an explanation of what 'Magu' means (which is the name of the restaurant). We still need another meeting to decide whether or not he would like the video to have an interview or to just have music and a show-reel of food.
The restaurant doesn't open for another 1-2 months, so there is plenty of time to prepare and plan what shots and equipment I would like to use during the shoot. Although this wouldn't be my main project - I would like to try and include it within my work as it would be a great learning experiences, as well as helping a friend and improving my portfolio.

The following video is a short animation of the 'Clitoris', which is a staff pick on Vimeo. I think that this animation is amazing and the short holds lots of information for the audience. It also highlights the fact that men have tried to explain the clitoris for centuries, when really they should step back (as it doesn't concern them), and let the Clitoris be used for what is is meant for - Pleasure.

One area that I want to improve on is using the DJI Ronin that we have access to. I watched the video on Lynda.com that gives a brief overview of the steady cam. It doesn't actually describe in detail how to use it - but they do mention it is best to get some experience first hand, before actually using it on a shoot. It is a very complex piece of kit and I think that it would be best to follow this advice. I'll make sure to book a time to go over the Ronin with Jamie. Another thing they mentioned in the video is that the Ronin works particularly well with a camera that is the same size/weight as the Canon C100. Fortunately, Jamie previously told me that we are receiving a number of Canon C100's on the 24th October. This will be an ideal time to run through the camera and the Ronin together.
The main reason I want to get use to these complex steady cams is because that is the particular style that I want to adapt with my cinematography. I love the smooth and steady panning/tracking shots that you can achieve with these pieces of kit. I will need to get as much experience with this kit over the next year. I may even invest in buying one if they are as good as I think they are.
